John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was created in 1963 to preserve and protect a portion of the only living coral reef in the continental United States. The park was named after Miami newspaper editor, John Pennekamp, for his efforts in establishing the Everglades National Park and his namesake FL State Park.
