Historic Huntsville Texas State Park is located 65 miles north of Houston inside the lush Pineywoods natural region of Texas. This park was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the great depression when a hard working group of 200 African American WWI Veterans came to this once dense forest to build a park for the Huntsville community. This area was logged heavily between 1880 and 1930 so the CCC's goal was to rebuild the forest by planting a variety of trees including oaks, elms, and pines. During this time, the CCC built the lodge and cabins that are still on site today as well as creating a damming system to create the park's main recreational site of Lake Raven. The park officially opened in 1956 and has been a Texan destination for camping, hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking and even geocaching!
