Tucked away just 3 miles north of the heart of historic downtown St. Augustine, you will find an absolute treasure trove of history! Fort Mose Historic State Park was the very first African settlement site that offered freedom dating back to 1738;  many decades before the Underground Railroad is thought to have been started. Florida was under Spanish rule at the time and it was Spain's intent to undermine the British economy and increase their population and militia. In 1763, the residents of Fort Mose fled to Cuba due to concerns of their freedom with Florida now being under British rule.

Today, experience living history through live reenactments and even walk the footsteps in the VERY newly built replica of the first fort that once stood at Fort Mose.
