In northeast Jacksonville, you'll find one of 11 National Park Service sites in Florida: Fort Caroline National Memorial. The Fort itself memorializes the extremely brief period of French occupancy in Florida in 1564 before the Spanish, well, came in and really took over the place in 1565 and destroyed Fort Caroline by order of King Philip II. The Fort you see here today was constructed in 1953 when the site became a National Memorial to memorialize this part of US history. 
 
Right next door, you will find some incredible (and dog friendly!) hiking trails at the Theodore Roosevelt Area of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve. Here you can explore 600 acres of perfectly preserved Florida hardwood forest, wetlands, and scrub vegetation. And be sure to bring your binoculars because this is a bird watching haven!
