Just 18 miles southeast of Columbia, SC stands the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the US and also one of the newest National Parks established (2003) - Congaree! One of the neatest things about visiting Congaree are the synchronous fireflies that visit this area of SC for approximately two weeks between mid-May and mid-June. During this time you can experience THOUSANDS of fireflies synchronous flashing while they search for a mate.
